LYNNE AVADENKA'S STUDIO TOUR
Last Month's outing to Lynne Avadenka's home studio (2 floors!) was really quite a treat. Lynne is such a scholarly print - book - maker. I think everyone loved her talk and how she evolves an idea into some absolute masterpieces was fascinating. What a treasure she is! She occasionally has work shown at the Lemberg Gallery in Ferndale. She is currently in an exhibit at Meadowbrook Gallery (by their theater) that features area bookmakers. Thanks Claudia Hershman for lining up this program!
CHARLES McGEE TALK
The Charles McGee lecture will be MARCH 22 - Monday at 1:00 pm. at the Southfield Public Library. Note time change. The Palette and Brush Club are hosting this lecture with some financial help from the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors as well as the BSWP. Ann Kelly has arranged this informative event. Charles is 85 this year, and has had or is having exhibits all over the area for this year. There will be a large Charles McGee exhibit at the BBAC later this year. Come hear what Charles has to say. He won the lifetime award from the Kresge Foundation last fall. (The first award given in this category and is $50,000.!!!) He is most deserving and inspirational.
STARRING GALLERY BSWP Spring Art Exhibit
Intake of your paintings is on Monday and Tuesday, March 29 and 30th between 10 - 6 pm at the gallery. To All members who will be celebrating Passover, you may drop off your paintings at Jeri's house before March 29th. She apologizes for the conflict of the dates. Her number is 248-851-0723. END OF SHOW PICK UP Dates are Friday, April 30 - or Saturday, May 1 between 10 - 6 pm. OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 2 from 6 - 9 pm. Thanks to Jeri for lining up this wonderful opportunity!
MEMBERSHIP- Kati Montgomery is our membership chair. We need the names of prospective members you and one other BSWP-er want to nominate by April 20th. To nominate a person, you must be a member for at least 2 years, and have one other member also recommend the candidate for membership. Both nominators should write a letter to the group listing qualities of your nominee and a resume (if she has one) and send to Kati by April 20th. We need to publish these names in the newsletter before the May meeting. That meeting will be for new membership and the nominators bring in a couple of pieces of their nominee's work for the membership to view. A vote is taken that day. It is wise to tell the nominee that we meet usually on the second Tuesday of the month (September through June)and ask the members to participate in holding offices in the group. If members want to exhibit at the Fall Show at the BBAC, they need to attend just one meeting. We need members who are willing to do this!! Kati's address and phone: 14943 Lakewood, Plymouth, MI 48170 (734) 420-2643 .
MEMBER NEWS, ETC -
Sign up at the BBAC for Spring and some Summer workshops is on-going. Jan Filarski alerted us to the Marilyn Derwenskus workshops - one weekend April 16 - 17 (Friday and Saturday) 10 - 4 pm - entitled New Directions in Water Media and another week-long workshop from June 14 - 18 (Monday - Friday) 10 - 4 pm - entitled The Beautiful, The Personal, and the Inappropriate. These both should be well worth the "price of admission" and for some a nice reunion with Marilyn as she was some of our members' first watercolor instructor many years ago. Marilyn has just retired from Ball State University in Indiana. I noticed she is teaching another workshop in Traverse City this summer as well. The BBAC is trying to bring in more workshops in the summer - nice for artists who don't want to commit for a whole semester, and still be a part of the BBAC classes and atmosphere! Check out the upcoming Summer Class Schedule as well as the Spring schedule.
Suzanne Bauman is having surgery this coming week. Send those healing wishes!
Betty Sylvester recovered nicely from her surgery.
And hopefully, Shirley Gower is home recovering from hers by now.
Now, that's enough surgery amongst us!!!!!
I didn't hear from anyone celebrating their inclusion in the annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition at the BBAC. I'm sure some of you are in this prestigious show! Will publish all those talented women's names next month. The opening for this exhibit is Friday, April 2, 5 - 8 pm.
Anyone with some news, please send or email me to share with the membership. OR if you saw a great exhibit, or found some great art supplies somewhere or WHATEVER, please let me put it in the newsletter. My address is: 639 Puritan, Birmingham, MI 48009 or Lhost@comcast.net
